Ultrasonic Inspections are a widely used testing method that has been around for a long time. We have decades of experience in performing Ultrasonic Inspections in various industries such as Oil & Gas, Food processing, Pharmaceuticals, Pulp & Paper and Power. Benefits of UT include:
- Increased sensitivity to surface & subsurface defects
- Access to one side (ID/OD) is sufficient for defect measurements
- Data analysis is performed in real time faciliting quick results and reports
- Highly accurate results which provide details required to make decisions based on RBI or other criteria
- Advanced UT techniques can be used to detect cracks and other defects along with accurate sizing and detailed imagery
- Penetration depth with UT is the highest of all testing methods
Ultrasonic Testing can be used on most plant equipment such as:
- Pressure Vessels & Columns – Shell, Piping, Nozzles & Welds
- Storage Tanks – Shell, Floor, Roof, Nozzles, Coils & Welds
- Process Piping – Pipe, Nozzles, Fittings, Castings & Welds
- Boilers – Tubes, Piping, Shell, Nozzles, Drums, Headers, Turbines, Bolts
- Heat Exchanger – Shell, Header Boxes, Nozzles, Piping, Welds
- Miscellaneous – All equipment requiring crack detection & thickness tests
Some of the Advanced UT Techniques we provide are:
Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT)
Phased Array is an advanced UT testing method that is best suited to detect cracks and other surface and subsurface defects in weldments, pipes and plates. The equipment is portable, battery powered and can be used in most industrial environments.
- Advanced UT testing method used for detection of discontinuities in Ferromagnetic & Non Ferromagnetic Materials
- Larger coverage area than conventional UT allows for increased speed of testing
- Powerful instrumentation provides enhanced quality of inspection
- Multiple transducers can be adjusted at various beam angles facilitating detailed inspections throughout the thickness of the material
- Powerful software provides detailed analysis, sizing and imagery of data collected
- Defects such as cracks, lack of fusion, lack of penetration, porosity, lamination, stepwise cracking, delamination etc. can be detected and sized
- Suitable for inspections of welds, tubes, pipes and plates
- Well suited for sizing of cracks in weldments
- Technique can be used in place of Radiography thereby reducing costs and revenue loss due to work stoppage
Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD)
TOFD measures the time it takes for an emitted sound wave to return. Unlike straight beam UT which measures only high amplitude sound waves, TOFD also measures the low amplitude sound waves that diffract from cracks.
- TOFD is a highly reliable Ultrasonic Testing method to detect discontinuities in welds
- Suitable for testing of HAZ (Heat Affected Zone) in piping, pressure vessels and storage tanks
- Suitable for testing of weld overlays and cladding
- Fast method to detect flaws in weldments with high degree of precision in detection on various types of defects
- Best suited method to monitor defects and track degradation over time providing highly accurate results and enhancing decision making capability
Internal Rotating Inspection System (IRIS)
IRIS is an advanced tubular inspection technique that can be used for inspection of tubes in Heat Exchangers, Boilers, Air Coolers and for testing of finned and prime surface tubular products. Since the method is based on Ultrasonic Technique, it is highly accurate in its sizing and detection capabilities.
- Excellent sizing capabilities of ID & OD flaws
- High resoultion detection of ID & OD corrosion and pitting
- Can be used on tubes with various OD’s and wall thicknesses
- Great results in detecting defects under the support plates and tube sheet
- Highly repeatable data provides consistent accuracy in monitoring defects over a period of time
- Excellent results in testing of finned tubular products
- Flexible centering devices permit testing of boiler generating bank tubes including mud drum and steam drum bends
Shear Wave Ultrasonic Technique (SWUT)
Shear Wave UT sends a sound beam through a metal at pre-determined angles. The distance and strength of these beams are measured when the sound is reflected back and anomalies and discontinuities can be detected and sized.
- Ideal for testing and sizing of defects in weldments
- Used in Pressure Vessels, Columns, Piping, Plates and Tubes
- Real time analysis of data provides quick and reliable reporting
- Portable system allows for deployment in various industry settings
- Multi angle capability provides depth of penetration for most metals
- Multi angle capability provides depth of penetration for most metals
In addition to the above listed Advanced UT techniques, we also provide conventional UT thickness testing services for all process components such as Boilers, Pressure Vessels, Piping, Storage Tanks and other components. We can assist with creating TML’s/CML’s for plant equipment along with development of detailed maps and reports.
